Learning Essentials 1020-Essentials of College Study
Reflection on Goal Setting
For this course, I was required to create goals and write a reflection on the process of creating them. On the My Goals page, I had already listed several goals that I am still in the process of working on. Since the purpose of this whole project of an online E-Portfolio is to showcase work and talents for future employment, I kept my goals more centered on educational and professional, as opposed to other types of goals. I used to not care very much about goal setting, but since I have become a college student, I have realized how essential it is to create, work toward, and accomplish goals.
Some goals I am closer to achieving than others, such as learning skills like critical thinking, effective communication, and working with others professionally and constructively, as per Salt Lake Community College's learning outcomes. Other goals are farther away, such as graduating a university with a Bachelor's degree. What keeps me motivated is the goal process. In my mind, it is exciting and gives me something to look forward to by setting and achieving goals.
I chose the goals I did because I am passionate about learning and writing, and I wanted my goals to reflect that. I feel it is important to set reasonable, attainable goals that one is interested in pursuing, otherwise the goals become drudgery, something that is painful to work towards. Not to say that working towards goals is easy, it rarely is. Working to accomplish your goals takes lots of work, dedication, and personal sacrifice. Everyone has obstacles they need to overcome, and some are more severe than others. The important part is to keep going forward.
Taking this course, Learning Essentials, Essentials of College Study, has been extremely helpful to me. I have found renewed interest in my goals. I have also learned to take the time once in awhile to re-evaluate my goals and make sure not only that I am still working at achieving them, but also that the goals are still realistic and attainable. They also must still reflect my values and interests.
I expect that as I accomplish my goals, other goals will come up to replace them. My goals may change over time, depending on circumstances and events yet to unfold. I know that no matter what happens, I can adjust my goals to fit my needs when I need them. Goals are an important part of life, I think that people always need to strive for something, otherwise boredom and dissatisfaction with life comes in. It gives us hope and happiness when we are working and achieving goals. It also boosts our confidence and self-esteem. I plan on having goals for the rest of my life!
