Art 1090
This was an interesting class, as the instructor required students to go to four art showings over the semester: an art gallery, a dance performance, a theater performance, and a music performance. All of these events were to be viewed live (no using DVDs or YouTube, I had to physically attend each event). For the reflective writing of this post, the instructor posed two questions:
A. What have you learned about the arts from participating in this class?
B. What did you learn about the communicative potential (the feeling or meaning) of the arts by viewing and writing about live performance?
A. I learned that the arts encompasses more areas than I thought, such as printmaking and metal work. I discovered that going to art functions was actually fun, and that Salt Lake Community College offers many free or low-cost events that showcase incredibly talented artists and their work. I turned a few of the performances into a cheap/free "date night" with my boyfriend and really had a good time at these performances. I also attended a Frida Kahlo art exhibit that the college showcased, and found that I now have a new painter whose work I want to collect. In the future, I plan on attending more arts events at the college to further branch out my artistic knowledge.
B. By learning proper art vocabulary, and how to critically analyze art, I am now able to communicate much more clearly about how a particular piece of work affects how I feel. Rather than just saying something like, "this painting looks dark and dreary", I can now say that the painting "has depth and makes use of shadows and darker color hues to project a mood of depression." Instead of saying "the dancer is quick", I will now say "the dancer uses fast, angular movements, high energy, and lots of space to convey a feeling of urgency."
